Flight Permission. Whether operating recreationally or commercially, drone operators must obtain permission from the DCA before conducting flights.
Drone Registration. Drones used for commercial, corporate or nonprofit operations must be registered with the DCA before they are operated.
Remote Pilot Licence. Commercial drone operations require a remote pilot licence issued by the DCA after the operator completes approved training and satisfies the applicable licensing requirements.
Import Authorisation. Drone importation requires prior approval. Equipment arriving without the necessary authorisation may be detained at the point of entry. Radio-frequency and spectrum matters may also involve the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, or MACRA.
Operating Limits. Operations are generally conducted within visual line of sight, during daylight and in suitable weather conditions. Restrictions apply around Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, other aerodromes and sensitive sites. Lake Malawi shoreline and over-water operations may require additional operational consideration.
