Drone operations in Sierra Leone are regulated by the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) under the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Regulations Part 6D (UAS). The points below are practical guidance, not legal advice. Always confirm current requirements with the SLCAA or through Aerosmart's regulatory brief.
Registration. Every person lawfully entitled to possession of an unmanned aircraft who operates it in Sierra Leone must register the aircraft and hold a valid certificate of registration, in compliance with the aircraft registration and marking rules (SLCA Part 7).
Authorisation. Drone operations require SLCAA authorisation; requirements scale from recreational to commercial use.
Pilot Competency. Commercial operation requires demonstrated pilot competency through SLCAA-recognised training; recreational operation does not require a pilot licence but does require registration and authorisation.
Insurance. Insurance is recommended and is typically expected for commercial operations.
Import. Drone importation should be cleared with correct documentation to avoid detention at entry.
Operating Limits. Standard visual-line-of-sight and daylight operation applies, with stand-off from airports and sensitive and restricted sites. Confirm current altitude and distance limits with SLCAA.
