The S1 does not use standard LED illumination technology. LEP - Laser Excited Phosphor is a fundamentally different approach to high-intensity lighting that delivers a combination of brightness, range, and energy efficiency that conventional LED spotlights cannot achieve at the same power draw and physical size.
How LEP Technology Works
In standard LED spotlights, the limiting factor on illumination range is the divergence of the light beam. The wider the beam, the faster intensity drops with distance, and concentrating a wide LED beam into a tight, high-intensity column requires optics that add weight and restrict flexibility between wide and narrow illumination modes.
High-Intensity White Light From a Compact Source
LEP technology uses a laser to excite a phosphor emitter that produces a highly collimated, intense white light source from a very small emission area, enabling the tight 4° high-beam FOV that delivers 300-metre range at 24W without the optical complexity that a conventional LED system producing comparable intensity would require.

The operator gets a spotlight payload that reaches farther than comparable LED-based systems at a power draw low enough to avoid the flight time penalty that a high-wattage lighting payload would impose on the aircraft battery. Four Lighting Modes provide dedicated illumination profiles for different operational scenarios. Low Beam Mode – 15° FOV, 150 Metres
Low Beam produces a 15° field of view with an illumination range of 150 metres, specifically matched to cameras operating at 5× zoom or higher. The illuminated area remains aligned with the camera's field of view instead of flooding unnecessary surroundings, making it ideal for close-range inspections, infrastructure maintenance, urban public safety operations, and search tasks where moderate-range illumination provides maximum efficiency.
High Beam Mode – 4° FOV, 300 Metres
High Beam concentrates the full LEP output into a narrow 4° field of view, extending illumination to 300 metres. This mode is designed for long-range target identification, search and rescue, emergency response, surveillance, and tactical public safety operations where distant objects require powerful, focused illumination. Despite its exceptional range, High Beam consumes only 24W, preserving valuable aircraft flight time.
Both On Mode – 15° FOV, 500 Metres
Activating both Low Beam and High Beam simultaneously maximises illumination intensity while maintaining the wider 15° field of view. This extends the effective observation distance to 500 metres, making it the S1's highest-performance lighting configuration for wide-area search operations, large incident scenes, disaster response, and any scenario requiring maximum brightness over the greatest possible distance.
Strobe Mode – High-Frequency Signalling
Strobe Mode generates a high-frequency flashing beam designed for signalling rather than continuous scene illumination. It enables rapid visual identification of the aircraft, assists emergency rescue coordination, marks incident locations for incoming response teams, and provides long-range visual signalling during public safety and tactical operations where attracting immediate attention is more important than continuous lighting.
Maximum central illuminance of 40 lux at 100 metres is the light intensity figure that determines whether the S1 illuminates a scene clearly enough for camera-based identification and documentation, or whether it produces insufficient brightness to resolve the subject detail that operational decisions require.
